As we approach the 14th of October 2025 end-of-life (EOL) date for Windows 10, many organisations are well into their upgrade planning. But what if your devices can’t make the leap to Windows 11?
Whether due to hardware limitations, software compatibility, or budget constraints, not every machine will be ready for Microsoft’s latest OS. Fortunately, there’s a safety net: the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme.
Why Some Devices Can’t Upgrade
Windows 11 has strict hardware requirements, particularly around supported CPUs and TPM 2.0. Devices purchased before 2018 are often incompatible. While Microsoft’s PC Health Check app can confirm eligibility, many businesses are discovering that a portion of their fleet won’t make the cut.
At EC2 IT, we’ve already helped clients assess their estate using tools like the PC Health Check and warranty lookups to determine upgrade paths.
What Is the Windows 10 ESU Programme?
The ESU programme is a paid subscription service from Microsoft that allows you to continue receiving critical security updates for Windows 10 devices beyond the EOL date. It’s designed for organisations that need more time to transition to Windows 11.
Key points:
- Eligibility: Devices must be running Windows 10 version 22H2.
- Coverage: Security updates only—no new features or design changes.
- Duration: Up to three years of coverage (until October 2028).
- Cost: Starts at £58 per device for Year One, doubling each year.

Who Should Consider ESU?
If you have essential systems that can’t be upgraded or replaced in time, ESU offers a secure bridge. It’s particularly useful for:
- Legacy applications that aren’t yet Windows 11 compatible.
- Hardware refresh cycles that extend beyond 2025.
- Budget-conscious organisations needing phased upgrades.
What Should You Do Now?
- Audit Your Devices: Identify which machines can and can’t upgrade.
- Plan Your Strategy: Decide whether to replace, upgrade, or enrol in ESU.
- Test Compatibility: Use the PC Health Check app or consult with EC2 IT.
- Act Early: ESU enrolment and licensing can take time—don’t leave it to the last minute.
