Two-thirds of big UK businesses targeted by cyber criminals

Cyber Security Breaches Survey has found that two-thirds of large UK enterprises have been victims of a cyber-attack in the last year.

The majority of attacks were virus related and 25% of firms had experienced the attacks at least once a month.

Importance of security & privacy

There have been a number of cases where a cyber-attack has resulted in the loss of millions of pounds for businesses. Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey echo’s this belief when he says it is “absolutely crucial businesses are secure and can protect data”.

The governments Cyber Governance Health Check was launched, along with the survey’s results, to address security concerns within the UK. It also comes after TalkTalk’s infamous security breach in October last year.

Government Investment

Ed Vaizey feels the government needs to invest in cyber security as a matter of urgency, “The UK is a world-leading digital economy and this government has made cyber security a top priority”.

“Too many firms are losing money, data and consumer confidence with the vast number of cyber attacks. It's absolutely crucial businesses are secure and can protect data."

With the survey also discovering that most attacks could have been prevented, this highlights the importance of educating businesses about the importance of cyber security.

A new National Cyber Security Centre has been formed, and with £1.9 billion being invested by the government, this should help plug the cyber security gap.
