National Trading Standards are making users aware of the latest scam targeting those who need assistance with their printer problems.

A group called ‘The eCrime Team’ are in place to support areas in Wales and England to ensure consumers and companies do not fall into the trap of the latest cyber scams.

Social Engineering?

The cyber criminals have set up a helpline that appears on social media sites and search engines to trick users into calling what appears to be a legitimate IT support phone number.

Once a user has called this ‘helpline’, the scammers will attempt to connect to your PC remotely and will then have the opportunity to steal personal information or infect the computer with a virus.

This is another example of IT support fraud – with cases like this rising by 47% since 2014 according to Action Fraud.

How to Avoid

Toby Harris, chair of the National Trading Standards suggests those who have fallen victim to such a scam are to contact Action Fraud or Citizens Advice on 03454040506.

As always, please be vigilant with scams like these and ensure you have Anti-Virus software installed and running.
